Fourth lecture of 448

The professor focuses in this lecture on some quotations and gives us general information about them:
1- The Hamlet's soliloquy in page 1719 when he sees his uncle prays .
2- The dialogue between Hamlet and his mother in page 1720 -1724. During this dialogue, Hamlet kills Polonius and blames his mother with rough words. He also makes a comparison between his father and his uncle " look here upon this picture….page 1721, line52". The most important thing in this dialogue is the Hamlet's confession when he declares that he is not mad "it is not madness…. Page 1723, line 132" and " that I essentially am not in madness, but mad in craft.. page 1724, line 171". The professor asks us " Does Claudius know that Hamlet is not mad or not? Of course Claudius knows that.
3- The dialogue between the king and his attendance in page 1726- 1727. In this dialogue, the king is in a very bad condition because Hamlet kills Polonius. The king explains that he cannot punish Hamlet because the people love him" I have sent…… He is loved of the distracted multitude.. page 1726 - 1727, act 4.3"
4- In page 1728 , line 66. Claudius reveals his plan to kill Hamlet by sending his to England.
5- In Hamlet's soliloquy page 1729 , he makes a comparison between him and Fortinbras.
6- The dialogue between messenger, the king, and Laertes page 1732 -1733 ( important). The professor concludes that : the difference between Hamlet and Laertes. Laertes comes back to Den very angry after hearing about his father's murder and holds his sword in order to kill anybody comes across him to take his revenge. In contrast, Hamlet hesitates to take his revenge. This deference is clear when Laertes says " I dare damnation……. Only I'll be revenged" Laertes is totally different form Hamlet. In this dialogue, we also see how politician the king is. He seems calm and speaks like a real king. He manipulates the situation very well and he is able to calm Laertes down. He also stop the revolution of Laertes.

The professor starts to talk about the second play " Twelfth Night " by making a comparison with Hamlet. Hamlet is a tragedy while Twelfth night is romantic comedy ( festive comedy). They have similarities in some of their themes, such as madness and love. The madness in Hamlet is associated with death where as madness in twelfth night is associated with festivity ( it calls midsummer madness). In Hamlet, love is not clear and ends with death while love , in Twelfth night, is clear and complex and ends with marriage.

The main characters in Twelfth Night are Orsino, Viola, Olivia and Malvolio.
