Death of a salesman is a great play written by Arhter Miller. It talks about a failure man, Willy, who cant accept change in life and cant face reality. However, when his son, Biff, tries to force his father to face reality he commits suicide. The play writer presents the play through the use of Willy,s flashbacks.
These flashbacks do not occur separate from the actions but rather as an integral part of them. The play moves between fifteen years back and present and from Brooklyn to Boston without any interruptions in the plot.
The use of flashback is fundamental to the structure and understanding of the play. That is because if you want to understand the present, you have to understand the past. The story starts at present-day and Willy the lapses in and out of the past. Also, the ~~~~~~~s of the flashback offer essential background knowledge to understand why the problems in Loman family are occurring. For instance, the flashback of Biff senior year when he sees a woman in his father department exposes for the reader the reason for the tension which occurs when his father knows that he will return to home.
In addition, flashback allows the reader to look closer into Willy,s mental state. Whenever something goes wrong in Willy,s life, he escapes to a happier time when Biff and happy loved and respected him. For instance, Willy always refer to certain year 1928 which we later know that it is the last happiest year before his son, Biff , saw him with the woman.
Moreover, the use of these different "states" allows Miller to contrast Willy,s dreams and the reality of his life in extraordinary details and also, slows him to contrast the characters themselves. For instance, when Biff visits Oliver to ask him a job, he is certain the he, Oliver, will remember him and be happy to meet him. But what happen is that Oliver left him for six hours" I waited six hours for him, see?" the, Biff starts to think about his life during this six hours and concludes that he is failure" how the hell did I ever get the idea I was a salesman there? I even believed myself that I'd been a salesman for him! and then he gave me one look and I realized what a ridiculous lie my whole life as been. We've been talking in a dream for 15 years. I was a shipping clerk"
When Biff tries to tell his father the truth, the flashback about Biff and his flunked in math appears. This shows us more about Willy,s character. He doesn’t want to face reality. Also, it shows us how Biff finds truth and reaches self-realization. But ,he cant tell his father and make him face reality" Dad, will you give me a minute to explain?" ," Dad, youre not telling me tell you what I want to tell you!"
To sum up, this ingenious method makes the play much more interesting while not sacrificing any important details. By the end, the reader is able to fully comprehend what factors have brought the Loman,s to the breaking points.
