Question Tags
1 A question tag is a short question following a statement:
This coffee is nice, isn’t it?
You can play the piano, can’t you?
2 We ask a question in this way to confirm something that we are already quite sure of:
You’re from Sweden, aren’t you?
(We’re quite sure the person is from Sweden, but we wish to confirm it)
3 A positive question tag follows a negative statement. A negative question tag follows a positive statement:
You like cheese, don’t you?
You don’t like cheese, do you?
4 We can use question tags with any tense and with modal verbs. Here are some examples:
Present Tense:
You eat here often, don’t you?
He is happy, isn’t he?
Present Continuous Tense:
She is skipping, isn’t she?
Present Perfect:
You have been there before, haven’t you?
Past Tense:
You ate it, didn’t you?
Past Continuous:
You were sitting there, weren’t you?
Past Perfect:
You had seen it, hadn’t you?
Future forms:
You will come, won’t you?
You will be coming, won’t you?
You are going to come, aren’t you?
Passive:
They are made in Japan, aren’t they?
Modals:
It should be fine, shouldn’t it?
He couldn’t come, could he?
