LANE 343 drama The Emperor Jones

In an Island in the west Indies ,smithers , a white trader enters the empty palace throne room of the Island's ruler,Emperor Brutus Jones .Suddenly ,he spies alone old black peasant women .After asking her very rough ,he discovers that all the natives of the Island have deserted the emperor and plan to revolt aginst his oppresive dictatorship.The women runs and the Emperor Jones enters wearing an ornate military uniform.There is tension between the two men .Jones proudly said that in two years he had gone from being first a porter in the United States and then escaped convict ,to emperor of the Island .The two men laugh at how Jones fools the Island people into believing he was a special powers and puts them into heavy taxes.Smithers reveals the news he had learned from the old women.Jones laughs and tells him that he is prepared for this.He intends to cross the forest to the coast in one night and escape with all money he has collected. Smithers tells him all the horses are gone but Jones said he knows the forest well and that he had puried tinned food in secret places . They hear the sounds of drums which Smithers says is aprelude to war:with no fear,Jones snatches up his plumed helmet and went out . Smithers who was left alone,hopes that Jones will be killed .In the desert at night ,Jones stops to rest , but he is disturbed by the sound of drums.He jumps up afraid but convinced himself that he is just tired and hungry. He did not find the food he hides under rocks.He is afraid and sees movement in the trees and shoots but no one there.He hears the clicking of dice being thrown and encounters the apparition of Charlie, the man he killed during acraps game.Jones very terrified asks Charlie whether he is a ghost ,Chalie disappeares. He hears the drums again,louder and closer now .He is afraid and runs ,throwing his military jacket away .He saw ablack women in aragged dress with agroup of well-dressed white man .Jones finds himself on a stave ship. He was killed and they dance around him .The body is laid infront of Smithers and then the natives lift the body again and carry it a way.

1)Brutus Jone
The main character in the Emperor Jones .He is tall and powerfull American negro man.
He is amiddle age .Formerly,he was a(Pullman )train car porter in the United States. He comes to the West Indian Island and becomes the emperor after convincing the natives that he has magical powers . Before coming to the Island,he had escaped from prison in America.
2)Jeff Charlie
The black man Brutus killed over acrap game in the United States.He is thin and brown rather than black skin ,middle aged man.
3)Henry Smithers
He is forty years old,tall,Englishman.He is bald and stooped ,shouldered. He has along neck with a big adam's apple which look like an egg .He speaks in a British Cockneg dialect .
4)Lem
Aformer chieftain in the Island and the leader of the natives who rebel against jones .He hates Jones and once hired another native to shoot him.He killed Jones at the forest with an aid of his men .
5)witch Doctor
He is old and naked except for the fur of some animal tied his waist .
