In the 1960s and 1970s, many students demonstrated against the government and hoped to make big changes in society. In the 1980s, most students were interested only in their studies and future jobs. Today, students seem to be a combination of the two: they want to make good money when they graduate, but they're also interested in helping society. Many students today are volunteering in the community. They are working to help people, without payment. For ex*ample, they tutor (teach privately) children in trouble, or they work with organi*zations for homeless people. In these ways, they hope to make changes in society.

be, due to technology—specifically, the Internet. At most colleges, all entering first-year students receive an e-mail address. Dormitory rooms offer high-speed Internet access. Computer systems are available to everyone in computer labs, the library, and student centers. Application for classes and registration are usually now possible online. Some schools offer entire courses online. Many professors still have "office hours," when students can come to talk with them about class work or ask for help. But increasingly, students can contact profes*sors twenty-four hours a day, thanks to e-mail. Perhaps most important for both students and professors, research is now easier and faster because of the new technology.
