How does each section end?

The second part of novel ends with the breakup of engagement between Ronny and Adela, and disintegration of British rule in India.

The third part of the novel ends with the acquittal of Aziz.

In the final section, Aziz becomes anti-British, and in the last scene he tells Fielding that they can never be friends until Indians kick the British out of India. And their horses swerve; meaning go different directions.

How does Forster describe the city of Chandrapore?

As any typical Indian city, it's very filthy city although it's situated along the banks of Gangs River. But we are immediately aware of the misery of the city.

Describe the way English and Indians live?

While the Indian people live in the most difficult living conditions and in very misery, English live in a very clean compounds. Hence we should aware of the huge differences between the different ways of lives.

What do the caves stand for?

The caves are ancient and they are a very important part in the Indian landscape. They are very high as if they shake the fist against the sky. And they are one of the most important symbols in the novel. They symbolize the power of the Indian landscape and defiance, they send a very powerful message the colonizer the if you can control people who can't do anything to resist the power, the caves will kick the British out of India and the land will always remain inaccessible.

What is meant by the statement that India is a muddle?

Muddle has connotations of dangerous of disorder, and it's meant that India is not easy or secure for colonizers to live in or to colonize. ( this answer is based on my background ).

What is meant by government officials?

The British people who serve and work under the government's command.

Who are the government official?

Ronny Heaslop: the magistrate of Chandrapore.

Mr. Turton: the collector, the man who governs Chandrapore.

Mr. Mcbryde: the boss of police in Chandrapore.

Major Callenar: the civil surgeon of Chandrapore.

How does Mrs. Moore's experience in the caves affect her?

Mrs. Moore is distracted and miserable because of her memory of the echo in the caves, and she dies on voyage to England, but not before she knows that there is no real India.

The important characters in the novel:

Dr. Aziz: an intelligent, emotional Indian doctor in Chandrapore. Aziz attempts to make friendship with Adela, Mrs. Moore, and Fielding. Later, Adela falsely accuses him of attempted rape, but eventually she withdraws the accusation at the trial.

Miss. Adel: a young intelligent Englishwoman. Adel travels to India with Mrs. Moore hopefully marry Ronny, Mrs. Moore's son, and also to see the real India.

Mrs. Moore: an elderly Englishwoman who voyages to India with Adela. She hopes that Adela marry Ronny, and wishes to see the real India.

Ronny Heaslop: Mrs. Moore's son by her first marriage, the magistrate of Chandrapore city. It was arranged to engage to Adela, but by the end, they breakup the engagement.

Mr. Turton: the collector, the man who governs Chandrapore, and he is indifferent to Indians.

Mrs. Turton: Turton's wife and she is also intolerant and against to be kind to Indians.

Mr. McBryde: the boss of police in Chandrapore, he and Fielding are friendly acquaintance.

Major Callendar: The civil surgeon in Chandrapore, the superior of Dr. Aziz, he is an intolerant official.

Professor Goldbole: A Hindu man who teaches at Fielding's college.

Hamidullah: Aziz's uncle and friend, who was educated at Cambridge and he believes that friendship is more possible in England than in India.

Mahmoud Ali: A lawyer friend of Aziz, who is deeply pessimistic to English.
