1- What is oral translation?

It's the translation of a speaker with the necessary pauses needed for the translator to relay the translation.



2- Are there any other names by which oral translation is called?

Interpreting



3- How many types do you know of oral translation?

Consecutive interpreting - Simultaneous interpreting – Whispered interpreting – Written text interpreting– Sign language interpreting



4- what does the term interpreter mean in translation? Name at least three

Interpreters convert one spoken language into another



5- what are the difficulties of oral translation?

Interpreting requires that one pay attention carefully, understand what is communicated in both languages, and express thoughts and ideas clearly. Strong research and analytical skills, mental dexterity, and an exceptional memory also are important.



6- What do you think are the advantages of a job as an interpreter?

Advantages of an Interpreter:

* Interpreters are useful for program development when execution speed is not important. As the interpreter is in command of the execution process debugging features can be build in.

* Debugging is easier since the interpreter stops when it encounters an error. If an error is deducted there is no need to re translate the whole program,

* There is no lengthy "compile time", i.e. you do not have to wait between writing a program and running it, for it to compile. As soon as you have written a program, you can run it.



7- What are the differences in job requirements between oral and written translation?

The oral translation requires a higher overall quality of work and the oral translator should master a wealth of professional knowledge. Even though both deal with putting texts into a different language, written translation and interpretation differ in various aspects. The most evident differences among others are:

Recorded or not

Interpreter interprets once and nobody will hear, read or analyze it again. Written translation, however, is recorded, it can be repeatedly read, amended, analyzed, retranslated, etc.

Tools

Interpreter’s tools are mainly the source text and his or her own knowledge, while it is also important to guess what the speaker might say next. Translator, however, can use various dictionaries, other texts on the same subject and expert advice and instructions. As the time for contemplation is very scarce in the case of simultaneous interpreting, interpreters may fall into difficulties when trying to convey e.g. jokes or idioms, as the detection of equivalents may require more time that is available in the interpretation process.

Time for contemplation

Simultaneous and whispered interpreting leaves minimum time to think, one must react immediately when the speaker has begun a sentence. Consecutive interpreting offers a bit more time, for interpreting is slightly delayed. Written translation provides as much time as stipulated by the deadline, and, as a rule, translator has time to go over the translation.

Team work

This only applies to simultaneous interpretation where each booth has two or three interpreters that help each other if necessary. Translators, however, mostly work alone, although they may consult with specialists, etc.

Client feedback

In case of interpretation client is present and able to comment after interpretation on the merits and drawbacks of specific interpretation. In the case of translation the feedback does not occur immediately, and it may happen that client gives no feedback at all.



8- What do you find enjoyable in translation?

Translation is pretty enjoyable to me for many reasons :

1. It allows me to know more about different cultures.

2. It develops my English language and my Arabic language as well.



9- What do you find frustrating in translation?

Translation takes a lot of time, and that we have to be very good in grammars is hard and to be selective when it comes to words is frustrating also.



10- How can you improve yourself as a translator in general?

1. Practicing more.

2. Knowing and revising the grammar of Arabic and English language.

3. To have a list of vocabulary to memorize every day.



11- how can you improve yourself as an interpreter?

By practicing more and by having tapes that have oral translation lessons.



12- how can you see a translation job in terms of whole and parts?

I can see it through the group work.

Making groups ـــــــــ divide the work on the groups ــــــــــ divide the work on each member of every group.



13- How can you evaluate a translated passage?

Check accuracy - Coherence – lucidity – style- Structure



14- What characterized a good translation?

Probably the most important are excellent writing skills in their target language, in-depth knowledge in one or more areas of specialization, and business management skills. Some would be translators are in practice not very successful because they have weak writing skills in their target language, making their translations difficult or unpleasant to read. Furthermore, translators need be patient and honest.



15- You are a translating office manager. How can you use group work to speed up the work in your office and improve its quality?

Divide the work between the whole and give every one what is fit his ability.

- Coherence:

When something such as a piece of writing is easy to understand because its parts are connected in a clear and reasonable way

or, to be logically connected.

-lucidity: clear and easy to understand

- Style: way of doing, designing, or producing something

-Structure: the way in which the parts of something are connected with each other and form a whole

-Synonym: group of words have similar meanings.

-practice: when you do a particular thing, often regularly, in order to improve your skill at it:

-theory: ideas that is intended to explain something about life or the world, especially an idea that has not yet been proved to be true

Or, an idea or opinion that someone thinks is true but for which they have no proof

-phor: something used to represent something else

-process: series of actions that are done in order to achieve a particular result:

-reference point: something you already know about that helps you understand a situation or, the background of the passage.

-Terminology: the science of terms as in a particular science or art.

-electronic translation: when u translate a passage by using electronic equipment.



19- What are the advantages and the disadvantages of electronic translation?

Advantages of machine translation (electronic translation):

Quick Translation

Using the machine translation system enables you to save your time while translating large texts.

Low price

If a professional translator translates your text, you have to pay enough money for each page but very often we need just a point of matter, general idea. In this case machine translation system is reliable and effective for us.

Confidentiality

Many people use machine translation systems to translate their private emails, because no one would agree to give his private correspondence to translator who he doesn't know, or no one would entrust financial documents to other people.

Universality

Usually a professional translator becomes specialized in a definite field, but machine translation system can translate any a text about any area. For the translation of special terminology you have to just switch on a corresponding setting.

Online translation and translation of web page content

The advantage of online translation services is obvious. Online translation services are at hand and you can translate information quickly with this service. Furthermore you can translate any web page content and query of search engine by the use of machine translation systems.

Disadvantages of machine translation

Lack of superior exactness

You can’t entrust Machine translation system if you need superior exact translation of the official documents, agreements and so on. You can get the gist, first draft of a translation then you can work on it and correct for exactness.

Inferior translation quality of the texts with ambiguous words and sentences

Machine translation is based on formal and systematic rules so sometimes it can’t solve ambiguity by concentrating on a context and using experience or mental outlook as a human translator.



20- In this semester, we focused on exact translation of text. However, there are other modes of translation, please mention three and describe them.

Communicative Translation: It attempts to render the exact contextual meaning of the original in such a way that both language and content are readily acceptable and comprehensible to the readership.

Idiomatic Translation: It reproduces the message of the original but tends to distort nuances of meaning by preferring colloquialisms and idioms.

Adaptive Translation: This is the freest form of translation mainly used for plays and poetry: themes/ characters/ plots preserved, SL culture converted to TL culture & text is rewritten.

Free Translation: It reproduces the matter without the manner, or the content without the form of the original. Usually it is a paraphrase longer than the original.



21- If you are translating some materials in Genetics what references would you probably need? (Examples: types of dictionaries general and specialized, grammar, books, encyclopedia, computer, a specialist to consult … ets)

I will need Special medical dictionaries for medical terms, books in the same field of genetic, and a friend or relative who is specialist n the Genetic science.



22- List the ways in which you benefited from this course? What are the skills you learned? Be specific

I learned so many things such as the steps of translation and I had been enhancing several skills such as the well-dealing with vocabulary and dictionaries as well.

there were a lot of homework that require a lot of work and time.



24- Do you have any suggestions that will make this course better? be specific !
