The last (fifth) lecture of 448
The professor moves very quickly through the second play, Twelfth Night and the important things which he said are:
- If the students want to understand characters, they must look carefully to:
1- Characters' back ground.
2- Characters' motives (why did they do what they do).
3- Characters' relationship.

• In Twelfth Night, Orsino is in unrequited love with Olivia.
• the most important dialogues in this play are the dialogue between Orsino and Viola, and the dialogue between Viola and Olivia. ( look carefully to these dialogues).
• Viola decide to disguise people by wearing man's clothes to show that she is a man. Does it make sense? What is her motive? Is it enough to wear man's clothes to hide her character? What is her intention by hiding herself? Act 1 scene 2.
• The first dialogue between Orsino and Viola in act 1 scene 4 is very important. In this dialogue Orsino chooses Viola( Cesario) to send her to his love Olivia why? Because viola is intelligent and is able to choose a good word in her speech" surprise her with discourse of my dear faith…… page 1774, line 24". Viola as a boy is very handsome and maybe he will draw Olivia's attention " for they shall yet belie …… page 1774 line 29 – 38"
• In Viola soliloquy " yet a barful strife ….. page 1774 line 40", she is attracted by Orsino and loves him.
• In this play, love is more complex. Orsino loves Olivia while Olivia starts to love Viola, and Viola loves Orsino and wants to be his wife.
• In the dialogue between Olivia and Malvolio, look to Malvolio's depiction of viola. Page 1777 line 123.
• There is a struggle between Malvolio with sir Toby, sir Andrew, and Maria why? Because of Malvolio's character that seems very self-righteous and proud. He has poor opinion of drinking, singing, and fun.
• Malvolio reveals a powerful ambition to rise above his social class by marring with his lady. As a result, he is punished in contrast of Maria who marries Sir Toby ( high class ). Why is Malvolio punished while Maria is not?

* Then the doctor talks about the final exam. He says it will consist of two parts :
Part one:
Quotations and he will ask us
Who says it?
From which play.
Maybe he will ask us to explain it in one or two lines.

Part two:
Long questions
He will ask as 7-8 questions and he wants us to answer it in a good paragraph ( written in acceptable English)
He gave us two examples:
1- Why does Hamlet think Denmark is a prison?
2- Does Ophelia die in an accident or commit suicide?

أسال الله لي ولكم التوفيق
