Passage I

Read the passage and answer the following questions.

A There’s good news and bad news about life in modern cities—first, the bad. People who study population growth predict a nightmare by the year 2005; the global population will be more than eight billion, and almost four billion of these people will be living in cities in developing countries such as India and Nigeria. Population growth is already causing unbelievable overcrowding. Due to this overcrowding, many cities have problems with air pollution, disease, and crime. People spend hours in gridlock—that is, traffic so horrible that it simply doesn’t move—when they commute daily from their homes to their work and back. There isn’t enough water, transportation, or housing. Many people don’t have access to health services or jobs. Now the good news: in some cities, instead of worsening, urban life is actually getting much better.

B It might not be a surprise to find that life in affluent cities is improving. But what about cities that aren’t rich? The city of Curitiba, Brazil, proves that it’s possible for even a city in a developing country to offer a good life to its residents. The former mayor of Curitiba for 25 years, Jaime Lerner is an architect and a very practical person. Under his leadership, the city planners established a list of priorities—in other words, a list of what was important to work on. They decided to focus on the environment and on the quality of life. With an average income of only about $2,000 per person per year, Curitiba has the same problems as many cities. However, it also has some creative solutions.

C One creative solution is the method of garbage collection—cambio verde, or Green Exchange. This does far more than clean the streets of trash. In neighborhoods that garbage trucks can’t reach, poor people bring bags of trash to special centers. At these centers, they exchange the trash for fresh produce such as potatoes and oranges. They receive one kilo of produce for every four kilos of trash they bring in. At a recycling plant, workers separate glass bottles, plastic, and cans from other trash. Two-thirds of Curitiba’s garbage is recycled, which is good for the environment. And the plant gives jobs to the poorest people, which improves their lives.

Passage II

Read the passage and answer the following questions.

A Many of us go home every day after work or after school. We cook dinner, watch TV, or spend time with our families. Usually, we don’t think about what it means to have a home. But even in rich countries like the United States, homelessness is a huge problem. Many people live on the streets, and many more live in housing that is inadequate: without heat and running water, without indoor toilets, or just old and falling apart. One of the biggest causes of homelessness is the lack of affordable housing—there are not enough houses that are cheap enough for poor people to buy.
B Habitat for Humanity (HFH) is one organization that is trying to do something about the problem of affordable housing. HFH builds houses for low-income people (people who earn low salaries) and sells them at low prices. There are three reasons that HFH houses are affordable for low-income people. First, homeowners and Habitat for Humanity volunteers work together to build the houses. Second, HFH sells the houses at no profit—they don't make any money from the sale, and they don’t charge any interest on the mortgage (the mortgage is the loan that the bank gives you when you want to buy a house). Finally, individuals, companies, and other organizations donate all of the necessary money and materials to build the homes, so the cost of building is very low.
C Habitat for Humanity doesn't build homes only in the United States. It works worldwide in countries such as Guatemala, the Philippines, and Ghana. Some of Habitat for Humanity's programs have been around for a long time: HFH recently completed its 20,000th house in Africa. Other programs are newer. Habitat for Humanity just finished its first house in Antigua and Barbuda, in the village of Bolans. HFH chooses its homeowner families according to their need, their interest in working with the organization, and their ability to repay the no-interest mortgage. HFH works withall types of people, but the only requirement is that the homeowners invest their time and energy into the program, helping to build their own house and the houses of others.
31. What is the main idea of paragraph A?
a. Habitat for Humanity tries to solve the homelessness problem.
b. Homelessness is a big problem that exists even in rich countries.
c. There should be enough houses for poor people to buy.
d. How having a home is interesting.

32. According to the passage, in what way can housing be inadequate?
a. If it lacks heat, running water, and indoor toilets.
b. If it exists in distant areas.
c. If it is not big enough.
d. If it does not have a garden.

33. Where do homeless people live?
a. On the streets or in housing that is inadequate.

34. According to the passage, low-income people are those who _____________.
a. earn low salaries
b. have many children
c. live on the streets
d. are jobless

35. What is Habitat for Humanity trying to do?
a. To provide homeless people with hotel rooms.
b. To lend people a sum of money so as to start a new project.
c. To build small huts in villages.

36. Why do some people suffer from homelessness in different parts of the world?

Online shopping with or against
There are many different ways of shopping. The latest one is shopping online, where you can buy many different kinds of goods by using the internet. In order to pay for what you want to buy, a credit card is used and all the items will be sent to your address.
As it is clear, there are many advantages of online shopping. To name some: the huge collection available for you to choose what you want from. The easiness of receiving what you have chosen no matter where they are originally from. The fact that you are actually buying things while you are sitting in your home without going all the troubles of the other ways of shopping.
It is true that online shopping seems perfect and convenient, but it has its own dark sides! You can be a victim of a theft because you can't be 100 % sure which site is save to buy from and which one isn't. Moreover, your personal information can sometimes be taken by others and usually misused. Getting the things you bought is expensive because you have to pay for the shipping and the membership fees.
Online shopping is indeed a new step in the marketing world. It may have its negative points but one can't deny the great things it actually do for the buyers.
