Why do we need research?
When do we need the research?
When do we undertake research?
-when we wish to explore an idea
When we wish to investigate an issue-

*secondary research: which is the examination of studies that other researchers have made of a subject.
*combination of the two types the primary and the secondary research
Give examples of the primary and secondary research?
-The primary source includes statistical data, historical documents, and works of literature or art.

-in the research you should look for sources that provide new information, that help fully survey the various positions already taken on a specific subject. (T)
-the process of researching and writing a research paper follows a fixed pattern. (F)
the truth is that different paths can lead to a successful research papers
What is the main purpose of the research?
The main purpose of the research is not to summarize the work of others but to assimilate and to build on it and to arrive at your own understanding of the subject.
Although there are different ways in writing a research, there are activities that nearly all writers of research papers perform. What are they?
-selecting a suitable topic
-conducting research
-compiling a working bibliography
-taking notes
-outlining
-preparing the paper
The documentation should not overshadow your own ideas or distract the reader from them, explain.
What is the purpose of documentation?
The documentation should only support your statement and provide concise information about the sources cited
*As you choose a topic remember the time allotted to you and the expected length of the research paper
*When looking for a topic, begin with a general topic and the refine it by thought and research
You can narrow your topic by focusing on an aspect or an approach to it*
What are the ways to refine the topic?
-Preliminary reading is essential as you evaluate and refine topics
-You can also refine your topic by doing subject search in reference database, online catalogue, and through internet search tools

What are the library resources?
-books and similar publications such as pamphlets
Print periodicals such as journals-
-miscellaneous print and nonprint sources such as sounds and video recording
-electronic resources such as online catalog of holdings, reference works, bibliographic and full text databases
What are the library services?
-a media centre
-photocopying machines
-Access to computers
-use of software applications, printers, scanning devices, and other hardware
Interlibrary loans-
What are the useful internet sources?
A-sites recommended by instructors and librarians
-gateway sites
-Peer-reviewed sites
B-internet search tools
Google-
-yahoo
What is the importance of librarians?
The librarians in the modern academic library play an important role to guide the researchers explain...
Why the library is will generally be your most reliable guide?
The librarians will evaluate the sources for authority and quality before acquiring them for use in the research
*the library electronic resources such as bibliographies and full text databases are accessible through computer terminals in the library and also over the internet through the library website
What are the benefits of the orientation and the instruction in the library?
Most libraries have programmes of orientation to meet the needs of all students.
How can I use the orientation in the library or how can I ask for instruction in the library?
Ask about introductory pamphlets or handbooks and guided tours as well as lectures and classes on using library.
What do you know about the professional reference librarians?
How can the professional reference librarian be helpful to you?
All public and academic libraries have desks staffed by professional reference librarians who can tell you about available instructional programs and help you locate sources. Consulting a librarian at key points in your research may save you considerable time and effort.
What is the central information system?
It's a system that guides student and faculty members to research sources
What does the central information system include?
-the library's catalog of holding
-bibliographic data bases
-other electronic sources
How does the central information system help you?
It guides student and faculty members to research sources. And it also might be a part of a network linking the catalog of a number of libraries. It includes:
The library's catalog of holding-
Bibliographic data bases-
-other electronic sources
Talk about reference works?
A useful way to begin reseaerch project is to consult relevant reference works. Some reference works, like indexes and bibliographies categories research materials by subjects and provide data that permit you to locate sources-author, title, date of publication
What are the reference works that provide data about research materials?
They are indexes, bibliographies, collections of abstract, and the guides to the research
What are the reference works that provide basic information about subjects?
Dictionaries, encyclopedias, biographical sources, yearbooks, almanacs, atlases, gazetteers, statistical resources
Talk about:
Indexes: the indexes guide you to material in newspapers, magazines, and journals as well as writings in book collections.

Collections of abstracts: it presents summaries of journal articles and other literature
Ex. Newspaper abstracts covers the Atlanta constitution, the Boston globe, and the tribune.
The guides to research: it seeks to direct you to the most important sources of information and scholarship in the area you are researching. it is selective and evaluative
What are the kinds of research guides?
-some research guides cover an intire fields. Some work have the title of art and information like: Research Methods And Resources. And the guide to the literature of pharmacy and the pharmaceutical sciences, and philosophy: A Guide To The Reference Literature.
-some guides to research are devoted to specific subjects withen fields.
The guides to research are different than the indexes, bibliographies, and collection of abstracts. Why is that?
It is because the guides to research are usually selective and evaluative.
The reference works that provide basic information about subjects are Dictionaries, encyclopedias, biographical sources, yearbooks, almanacs, atlases, gazetteers, statistical resources. Talk about each and give examples?..
Dictionaries: are alphabetically arranged works that provide information, usually in concise form about words or topics. Ex, THE OXFORD ENGLISH DICTIONARY
Encyclopedias: are works, usually alphabetically arranged, that give introductory information about subjects.
There are 2 kinds of encyclopedias. The popular general encyclopedias and the specialized encyclopedias.

What are the publication form of reference work? explain.
They are print and electronics
Prints:
Print works maybe located in the reference room
The genereal reference books, like dictionaries, encyclopedias, biographical sources, yearbooks, atlaes, and gazetteers, may all be ved together in one place
Electronic:
The reference works that are available as electronic databases are usually online or on Cd-room
What's the difference between the print and the electronic reference work?
Which one is better getting to the reference work through prints or through electronic database and why?
-What's the difference between getting the information, or searching for the information through book or through an internet or electronic database?
Online and cd-room databases have number of advantages over print versions of reference works.
Much more information is generally available in a database-
-the information is more corrent in the electronic format
-electronic databases generally allow you to print out or download
-some
