Reading:
When we think of Italian food, “pizza” comes to mind. However, the first pizza was not made in Italy. The Greeks were the first people who started to bake large, round breads. They put oil, herbs, spices, and dates on top of the breads. The Greeks called them ‘plakuntos’. Tomatoes had not been discovered at that time so they weren’t part of the pizza yet.
In Italy, the Italians had something similar to the ‘plakuntos’. They called it ‘picea’ at first. Then, it became ‘pizza’. Because they were cheap and delicious, pizzas were sold to poor people all over Naples. Later, people added more toppings (things that are put on top of a pizza) like cheese and meat. By the 16th century, tomato was added to the pizza.
